The Madeira East Tour is another very popular tour that offers really scenic views of the Laurisilva forest, gardens, and coastal areas. The East Tour kicks out with a beautiful drive to Camacha, widely recognized as the island’s cultural epicenter. The still-popular wickerwork products are a product of Madeira’s long history of manufacturing. At this point, we’ll continue our trip up to Pico do Arieiro, the island’s second-highest mountain, where we’ll be treated to panoramic views from an altitude of 1,818 meters.
Next on the East Tour, we drive through the Laurissilva forest on our route to Ribeiro Frio. You have the option to take a little walk along the levada to the Balcoes at this point. Since it’s a short, simple walk to one of the island’s most breathtaking vistas, we suggest everyone should give it a try. The town of Santana, with its traditional A-framed homes and thatched roofs, is our next destination. People continue to make their homes in such structures nowadays. For those who enjoy gardening, there is a large range of flowers on show all year.
The next stop is in Faial, a popular place to eat lunch. After eating, we’ll travel over the North Coast’s sugar cane terraces to the Southeast Coast’s Machico, the old capital of Madeira and the site of the 15th-century arrival of the first Portuguese inhabitants. The East Tour ends at Ponta de Sao Lourenço, the island’s easternmost cape, where you may marvel at the unique rock formations before heading back to Funchal.
