The Referta walk is a leisurely and delightful experience. The trail was made by man many years ago and takes you through some of the villages on the northeast coast. The 6 km-long levada offers spectacular views of the terraced fields and houses below. This walk can be found on the north side of Madeira Island, in Porto da Cruz. We start the walk near Referta and continue in the direction of Castelejo.
The path winds through the agricultural fields of Madeira Island, dominated by local crops such as fruit trees, legumes, and vegetables, grown mainly for self-consumption by the farmers who are happy to share their knowledge with visitors.
Enjoy the stunning scenery as you stroll, which includes the striking Penha d’guia, a 580-meter-tall rock structure. As you get closer to the trail’s finish, you will start to notice the neighborhood homes, which are furnished with colorful flora and may even be met by kind locals that live and work in the area.
The Referta walk is ideal for families and those who want a more physically accessible levada experience. The walk concludes at a local bar where you can sample local drinks and food. Of course the famous “Poncha” made with sugar cane rum, is on offer.
Take the time to savor the sights and sounds of the rural areas of Madeira Island, surrounded by the lush greenery and endless panoramic views of the island. Enjoy a day in the countryside, soaking in the tranquility and the region’s beauty. Book the Referta walk now.
