The Madeira Kings walk is a beautiful walk, which is situated in the lush valleys of São Jorge. This walk will take you into one of the lushest places to be found on the island. Also known as the “Levada do Rei,” this hike begins at the Quebradas Water Treatment Plant. Additionaly, with a knowledgeable guide, learn about the herbs and medicinal plants that grow in the Sao Jorge valley.
The initial leg of the Madeira Kings walk, also presents travelers with beautiful panoramic views of the São Jorge and Santana farmlands. After the midway point of the trail, the levada that winds from the interior of the island along the mountain slopes passes through a spectacular area of native forest which is well-developed and rich in natural biodiversity.
Discover and enjoy one of the best-conserved portions of the Laurissilva Forest which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, with a diverse range of plants. Then, reach the source of the Levada, the Ribeiro Bonito, for a well-deserved break before making the journey back.
Discover tunnels of lush vegetation and a wealth of species, showcasing the power of nature. The Levada itself is a valuable cultural heritage, with a three-hundred-year-old water mill (moínho) that still grinds wheat, maize, barley, and rye grown on the terraces of São Jorge.
